Funky Grogg for First Minister

Funky Dragon celebrated the 20th anniversary of the UNCRC by awarding First Minister the Rt Hon Rhodri Morgan AM one of our very own Groggs. To recognise his outstanding contribution to children’s rights in Wales and support of us, over the years, Funky Dragon reps, Ryan Chris, Victoria and Jordan gave Rhodri a special edition Grogg.

The 20th of November was the 20th anniversary of the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Welsh Assembly Government marked the day with an event at the Senedd.

The Groggs are normally reserved for Funky Dragon Grand Council members who receive them in celebration of having served a full term with us. The first minister has been instrumental in making Wales the most progressive nation in the UK with regard to children’s rights. It is due in no small part to his leadership that Wales has adopted the UNCRC as a guiding principle when developing and implementing policy for children and young people.

Because of this Wales has lead the way on things like the early years education program and a fully developed youth parliament (us). It is only a question of time before England and the other devolved nations follow suit.

The first minister was closely involved with the “Our Rights Our Story” project which fed back to the United Nations on children’s rights in Wales. He has also given keynote speeches at many of our AGMs and championed our cause in the cabinet and in public. We thank him for his help so far and wish him well for the future.
